Esemplare iconico della monetazione repubblicana senese. Il simbolo della lupa, adottato dai senesi sin dai primi decenni del Trecento, rivendica il mito della «res publica» di Roma antica come ideale ispirazione di un modello governativo a cui conformarsi.
