In February 1981, Jean-Michel Basquiat took part in the New York / New exhibition
Wave designed by Diego Cortez at the Long Island Institute for Art and Urban Resources.
The exhibition includes more than twenty artists including Keith Haring, Robert Mapplethrope, Kenny
Scharf and Andy Warhol, in addition to the graffiti artists Ali, Crash, Dondi, Fab 5 Freddy,
Haze, Lady Pink, Seen and Zephyr, Basquiat represented twenty works among drawings
and paintings that cover an entire wall. His work particularly attracts the attention of the
art dealers Emilio Mazzoli, Annina Nosi, and Bruno Bischofberger. In autumn Annina
Nosei invites him to participate in the collective Public Address, set up in his gallery
New York, it will become the reference gallerist putting it at the disposal of the
basement of the gallery, which will become the study of Basquiat. This exhibition is the
launch pad that officially introduces Basquait into the art world, by stating
Basquiat as worthy heir to CY Twombly and Jean Dubuffet, having absorbed and
combined in his works the elegance of Twombly and the primitivism of Dubuffet.
