"... I was born in Catania in a house located below the street level, we were eight among parents, children and an old sister of my father ..."

Emilio Greco was born in Catania on 11 October 1913.

When still at school, he shows his passion for art: secretly, discouraged by his father who would like him

starting a more profitable profession.

However, the modest conditions of the family will push him towards sculpture.

It achieved great popularity with the Pinocchio and the Fairy monument (1956) for the town of Collodi. His cycle of the Great Bathers and his portraits of young women are poetic.

He continued teaching in Naples for several years, and then back to the capital from 1967 to 1975. After that, he first held the chair at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, and later worked in Salzburg on the interest of Oskar Kokoschka.
